PE at Burnley Road Academy

Unihoc tournament

On Tuesday 14th October, a group of our children took part in a Unihoc competition, playing against schools from across Calderdale. Although the team finished in 8th place, every child demonstrated outstanding resilience and perseverance throughout the tournament. Their determination, teamwork, and compassion towards one another were truly inspiring. We are incredibly proud of how hard they worked and the positive attitude they showed, both on and off the pitch.

Cross Country

Last week, children from Years 3 to 6 had the exciting opportunity to participate in the HX7 Cross Country event held at Calder High School. Every child who took part performed exceptionally well, demonstrating remarkable perseverance and determination throughout the race. They also showcased excellent sportsmanship, supporting one another and competing with respect and enthusiasm. We are incredibly proud of how brilliantly our Burnley Road pupils represented our school, showing great dedication and team spirit. Well done to all our runners for their outstanding effort!

Play leaders

Today, a group of our children visited Mytholmroyd Community Centre to take part in a special training session to become Play Leaders. During the session, the children learned valuable skills on how to organise and lead a variety of games for their peers to enjoy during both indoor and outdoor playtimes. They practiced communication, teamwork, and leadership, gaining confidence in supporting others and promoting active play. We are very proud of how well-behaved and enthusiastic the children were throughout the training, demonstrating great maturity and responsibility. This opportunity will help them contribute positively to our school community by encouraging fun, inclusive, and safe play for all pupils.

Skip2Bfit

This week, all of our children had the opportunity to take part in an exciting Skip2Bfit session—and what a fantastic time they had!

The Skip2Bfit programme brings energy, enthusiasm, and exercise to schools, encouraging children to get active through skipping. Each class took part in a high-energy session led by a Skip2Bfit coach, where they were challenged to skip for two minutes, record their personal score, and then try to beat it!

Throughout the day, it was brilliant to see every child engaged, motivated, and having fun while developing their fitness, coordination, and perseverance. The sessions weren’t just about physical activity—they also focused on goal setting, resilience, and encouraging a growth mindset, with children determined to improve on their own scores.

It was especially lovely to see pupils cheering each other on and celebrating personal achievements, no matter their starting point. Staff joined in too, making it a real whole-school event that promoted a positive, active, and healthy lifestyle.

A huge thank you to Skip2Bfit for such an inspiring day—and well done to all our pupils for giving it their all!

Our Unihoc Club has been a great hit with pupils, offering a fast-paced, fun introduction to this exciting team sport! Children have been developing their teamwork, coordination, and stick skills while enjoying friendly matches and skill-based challenges. The club is a fantastic way for pupils to stay active, build confidence, and try something new in a supportive environment. Well done to everyone taking part!

Football Club

Football Club has been a fantastic opportunity for pupils to develop their skills, teamwork, and love for the game. Each week, children take part in warm-ups, drills, and matches, building their confidence and understanding of fair play. The enthusiasm and sportsmanship shown by all participants has been brilliant to see. Well done to everyone who takes part — we’re proud of the progress you’re making on and off the pitch!

We encourage all children who leave Burnley Road Academy with the knowledge and skills to lead a healthy, active and love for exercise and sport. Children are exposed to a range of different sports are encouraged to persue these outside of school. We are incredibly lucky to have a specialist Sports teacher who has extensive knowledge who teaches KS2. The children have the opportunity to join a range of sporting activities, after school, by specilists in the sport. We are also part of a HX7 Cluster of schools, where we often have competitions to attend.

At Burnley Road Academy we follow a PE scheme, called 'The PE HUB'. The scheme shows a clear progression from EYFS all the way to Year 6. In EYFS and KS1 they are building up skills ready for KS2 where they move towards key sports.
